Candido is a Cinematic film for 35mm cameras – with a special Sparkle!
The original Cinematic film to hit the market for 35mm cameras was created over 10 years ago.
Cinestill Film was founded in 2012 by brothers Brandon and Brian Wright, who were inspired by the unique look of motion picture film. They began experimenting with adapting motion picture film for use in still cameras, and soon developed a process for removing the remjet backing from the film, which is a necessary step for making motion picture film suitable for still photography.
Soon others followed suit, utilising Kodak film to supplement a shortage of readily available 35mm film stock. Some companies even took the decision NOT to remove the remjet but for the convenience of photographers and processors, most did.
A host of new films with a cinematic feel, adjusted colour palette and colourful halos around bright lights became available, but not without controversy.Long story short, the folks at CineStill felt threatened by the competition against their main product and may’ve not dealt with it in the best way possible (see the link above for the full story).
This image was taken at North Narrabeen saltwater pool, with a Vintage 1960’s Canon Demi half frame format camera.
Other manufacturers broke onto the scene; Reflex Labs, Amber T-800, Vesper Cine 500, just to name a few. One of the latest new films on the market Candido, coming out of the UK, has a great ‘cinematic’ feel and beautiful halation around specular highlights (such as water sparkles or spotlights). It’s available in 35mm only at the moment 200, 400, and 800 ISO – but maybe in the future it’ll also come in medium format….. we’ll see.
At the time of writing we are the only importers of Candido film into Australia and we love it! It’s also had a great reception from a lot of our customers who are looking for a film with a retro feel and a little extra magic. It’s colour palette is muted but if overexposed can be super saturated and looking for subjects that can provide specular highlights adds another dimension to the photography experience.
The image on the right was taken with a Nikon F100 in Sydney’s CBD – long exposure (around half a second I think!) with the camera on a tripod
